Student Kunika Kakuta organised a charity concert on Tuesday 2 February to raise funds for the Father Joseph Mercy Centre in Bangkok and the Haiti Earthquake Appeal. The event was a resounding success and raised over £700.

Staff and students volunteered their talents to support her initiative and over 100 parents and guests enjoyed the hugely varied programme - from a Joplin rag played on the flute to a show stopping number from 'Chicago'.  Kunika contributed her own musical talent on the piano with a beautiful performance of a Chopin Nocturne.

A party of volunteers from Cobham Hall went to Thailand in October 2009 to work on the Round Square project on Ko Phi Phi Island, helping to build a community centre for a village which had been devasted by the tsunami in 2004. They took the opportunity to visit the Mercy Centre in Bangkok, which acts as a shelter for street kids, an orphanage, a hospice, a home for mothers and children with HIV/AIDS, a 400 pupil kindergarten, a community meeting place and a serene haven in the slums with small gardens and playgrounds.

What the girls saw there inspired Kunika to do something to contribute to the work carried out at the Centre and on her return she set about planning her concert.  When the recent earthquake caused such suffering in Haiti, Kunika decided that a contribution to the disaster appeal should also be made from the proceeds of the concert.
