Thailand Tsunami Project
We all remember the dreadful scenes of devastation following the tsunami in December 2004. Round Square was quick to see the need for initiatives which would address the long-term problems which would arise. The Regent's School project is to build a community centre for a group whose homes and livelihood were wiped out by the tsunami.
A party of volunteers from Cobham Hall travelled to Ko Phi Phi island in October to help with the project, living and working alongside the local community and other volunteers for a week. They then took the opportunity to visit Bangkok for a few days, including a visit to Father Joseph's Mercy Centre for street children with AIDS.
The girls financed their own travel costs and expenses, and everyone joined in school fundraising activities to raise money both to support the volunteers and to fund building materials for the project. Over £2,500 was raised including:
- A Fashion Show which raised over £1000
- A sponsored cycle ride, covering ovr 200 miles
- Two sponsored silences
- Sale of doughnuts at morning break
- A staff House Spelling Bee
