Oxbridge Conference
On Wednesday 10 February, over 100 staff and students from local schools attended a conference at Cobham Hall to find out more about the opportunities available at Oxford and Cambridge.
The panel of speakers included Paul Teulon, Head of Student Recruitment at Oxford, and Nick Lee, the University Liaison Officer for the International Baccalaureate Organisation. Presentations on Teaching and Learning and Subject Choices were given by Dr Geraldine Parsons, a Research Fellow at Trinity College Cambridge, and Dr Llewelyn Morgan from Brasenose College Oxford. The students then joined current staff and undergraduates from Oxford and Cambridge in subject focus groups, to find out more specific information about the opportunities in various university faculties.
The Conference closed with a question & answer session. The speakers were joined by five current undergraduates, one of whom was former Cobham Hall student Joy Tuffield, who is currently at St Hilda’s Oxford reading Physics and Philosophy.
Mr Antony Pinchin, Senior Master and IB Director at Cobham Hall, said: ‘It is important for students who have the potential to apply to Oxford and Cambridge to explore the possibilities open to them. This Conference gave them the opportunity to hear from a very varied panel of speakers, and to discuss issues with senior university staff and current undergraduates. We were also delighted to have the University Liaison Officer from the International Baccalaureate Organisation on our panel, ensuring that students currently studying the IB were well informed on how universities view the IB Diploma.’
