The Guardian Convention 2007

The Guardian Convention 2007 was held on Thursday 8 March.

Students in the lower sixth were invited to stand for the position of Guardian (Head Girl) for the year 2007/2008, and two excellent candidates put themselves forward for this year's election.

In the democratic tradition of this unique event, the candidates spent time prior to the Convention preparing their election campaign, publicising their aims and canvassing support.

On the day of the Convention, the candidates joined the Headmistress on the platform to make their presentations.  Despite the pressure of the occasion, both candidates made excellent speeches, each using wit and humour to emphasise the personal qualities which she hoped would get her elected.  Each candidate then introduced the two students whom she had chosen to be her Deputies, and they in turn made a 2 minute presentation in support of their team.

Question time is always a test of nerves - and good preparation and quick thinking are essential.  Both candidates acquitted themselves very well, addressing some searching questions from the floor.

All staff and students vote in a supervised confidential ballot, and voting was enthusiastic, with very few abstentions or spoiled ballot papers.   After careful counting of all the votes, the result was announced by the Headmistress over the school's PA system at afternoon break.  The new Guardian, Kirsty Canning, was advised by mobile phone as she was by then on her way to attend a Round Square Conference at Abbotsholme School.

Congratulations to Kirsty and her team.  Congratulations also to all the candidates who were not elected, but who did so well on the day and made such an excellent contribution to the Convention.
