Year 9, 10 and 11 Art students were involved in a Sculpture Workshop in early February. Two artists, one a sculptor, the other a textile artist, led the day-long workshop.
The guest artists inspired the students by providing imagery of natural habitats. “The imagery was so beautiful and carefully crafted,” commented Head of Art Mrs Walsh, “it was difficult to believe that birds and insects constructed them.”
The girls were given a wide variety of materials to work from and the GCSE students in Year 10 and 11 were given the opportunity to work on a large scale. They constructed their own sculptures inspired by the imagery they were shown and examples of work the artists brought in with them. As well as making large constructions, they also made delicate paper sculptures. The sculptor demonstrated his very own technique and all the GCSE students had a chance to try this themselves.
Mrs Walsh commented afterwards, “It was a very busy and productive day for all the students and they all managed to produce some exciting work.”
