Maidstone Music Festival Success
Last weekend, a number of Cobham Hall girls took part in the Maidstone Music Festival, competing in the piano and vocal categories. Our vocalists, Emily, Year 13, Lucy, Year 11, and Jessica, Year 8, all won their respective age categories, with performance including Rachmaninoff’s ‘Ostrovok’, Schonberg & Boubil’s ‘Empty Chairs at Empty Tables’, and Bart’s ‘Who Will Buy’, from Oliver. Our Pianist, Year 10’s Joey, also won her category, playing Haydn.
We are delighted that following her success, Lucy has been given the additional accolade of having been invited back next year to participate in the Maidstone Young Musician Competition.
The opportunity to perform and get feedback from established professional musicians is vital for young performers who are still dealing with mastering the techniques of their instrument, but also performance nerves. “What performers hear in their own heads, and what they think they are or aren’t doing, isn’t always necessarily what an audience hears,” explained Penny Clements, Head of Music. “This is why recording yourself, and critically listening back, is so important to assess what is going right and what still needs tidying up or emphasising more.”
The girls all performed with great musicality and confidence, and received very positive comments from the adjudicators. We are so thrilled that girls who show continued commitment to their musical studies can be rewarded for their hard work – especially when also sacrificing a well-earned Saturday rest!
