  • A Conversation with Brian: Pioneer Lower School Boy
May 22, 2025

Cobham Hall has taken a significant step into it’s new era by welcoming its first boy into the Lower School. Year 9 student Brian has made history as the first male pupil in a traditionally all-girls environment, marking a moment of meaningful change for the school community.

From his very first day, Brian has approached his unique situation with a sense of purpose and enthusiasm. “At first, I was surprised – it’s not something you expect,” he reflects. “But then I felt excited. It’s a big opportunity to be part of something new and to help shape the future for other boys who will join later on.”

Brian’s academic interests are as varied as they are impressive. He has a particular passion for Science, especially Physics and Biology, and also enjoys Mathematics, PE, and Computing. “I like learning how things work, both in the natural world and through technology,” he explains. Outside of the classroom, he expresses an interest in coding, game development and playing sports - activities that highlight both his intellectual curiosity and energetic spirit.

His transition into school life has been smooth, thanks to a warm and inclusive welcome from staff and fellow students alike. “Everyone was really kind and welcoming,” he says. “My classmates included me straight away, and the teachers have been encouraging and supportive. I’ve never felt like an outsider.”

Being the only boy in the Lower School could have posed challenges, but Brian has embraced the experience as a valuable opportunity for personal growth. “There are a few differences, of course, but they haven’t been a problem,” he notes. “It’s helped me learn how to connect with different people and be more open-minded. Everyone treats each other with respect, which makes it easy to fit in.”

He speaks highly of the school’s learning environment, describing it as engaging and forward-thinking. “The classes are interesting, and I feel like the teachers really want us to succeed,” he says. “I’ve enjoyed getting involved in the community and making new friends.”

As Cobham Hall prepares to welcome more boys into the Lower School next year, Brian is looking forward to sharing the experience with others. “It will be great to have more boys here - it will help create a more balanced environment. I’m also proud to have helped pave the way.”

To boys considering joining the school in the future, Brian offers encouragement: “Go for it. Cobham is a great school with lots of opportunities. Being one of the first boys is something special. You’ll be welcomed and supported, and you’ll get to be part of something unique.”

Looking ahead, Brian hopes to achieve both academic success and personal development during his time at Cobham Hall. “I want to do really well in my subjects, especially in science and computing, and take part in as many activities as I can. I also hope to be a good role model for future students and make a positive impact on the school community.”

As the school embraces a more inclusive future, Brian’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of courage, openness and the willingness to lead. “It feels great to be part of such a big change,” he says. “I know that in the future, when there are more boys here, I’ll be able to look back and say I was the first - that’s something I’ll always be proud of.”

Cobham Hall is delighted to be leading the way with students like Brian who embody the values of resilience, curiosity and community spirit. His journey marks not just a personal milestone, but a significant chapter in Cobham Hall’s evolving story. As the school moves confidently toward a fully co-educational future, Brian’s experience offers both inspiration and assurance - that positive change is only possible when met with open hearts and minds.

Cobham Hall looks forward to welcoming more students who, like Brian, are ready to embrace opportunity and help shape a dynamic and inclusive school environment.
