- Art Department Celebrates a Successful Year

Excellent Results
We are delighted to share the success of the art department under the leadership of Mike Turner. Our results this year have been wonderful in both A Level and GCSE, excellent in both A Level and GCSE, thanks to the support of Mr. Turner.
At A Level, students in Art, Craft and Design achieved a flawless 100% A*-B grade rate, while those studying Graphic Communication weren’t far behind, with an impressive 86% securing A*- B grades, many of our A Level Art students have moved on to attend top Art universities and courses. These results speak volumes about the high standards and supportive environment that have become the hallmark of the department.
The success continued at GCSE, where every single student passed, and a third achieved top grades of 9-8 (equivalent of an A*). An outstanding 72% of students were awarded grades 9-6, cementing the department’s reputation for excellence across all levels. Students of all abilities are supported and challenged equally;the department ensures that every student is empowered to progress, no matter their level or ability.
Much of this success can be attributed to the inspirational leadership of Mr Mike Turner, who has transformed the department since his arrival in January 2023. With 27 years of experience in education and expertise spanning Fine Art, Photography, Graphic Design and Filmmaking, Mr. Turner combines traditional techniques with digital innovation to create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment. His forward-thinking approach ensures students engage deeply with the creative process, developing both technical skill and artistic confidence. His vision, energy and commitment have inspired new life into the subject, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. This year, Mr Turner was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the prestigious Pearson Teaching Awards, recognising him as a contender for Teacher of the Year.

Adaption and Innovation
By embracing hands-on workshops, cross-media exploration and digital tools, the department equips students with real-world experience essential for creative careers. Students are encouraged to take artistic risks, supported by constructive feedback and a nurturing, personal approach to teaching. Cobham Hall Elder and previous Art Scholar Bardot reflects, “His passion, creativity and support have completely changed how I view the subject. He always finds new ways to challenge me, encouraging me to push my abilities and think outside the box”. We are proud to share that Bardot received a Grade 9 (A*) in GCSE Art.
The department itself has become a home of creativity and security within the School. With large, light-filled Art rooms, a professional-standard Photography Studio, an equipped Darkroom and a brand-new Student Gallery currently under construction, it offers students a space to learn, explore and express themselves artistically.
Mr Turner has adapted and developed these spaces to ensure students can work flexibly across media, often welcoming students into any available corner during his lessons, creating a truly inclusive studio culture. It's no surprise that the department was named a finalist in the Education Choices Awards for its outstanding Opportunities in Art and Music, proudly standing alongside some of the biggest names in the independent sector.
This year’s achievements mark a turning point for the Art Department, one defined by ambition, innovation and a genuine love for the creative process. From national competition winners and university-bound artists to those finding confidence and joy in creativity for the first time, the Department has become a place where all students are celebrated and discover there is more in them than they think.
