World Challenge 2026: An Unforgettable Expedition to Borneo

This month, a small group of students embarked on an extraordinary expedition, straight into the wild heart of Borneo as part of the 2026 World Challenge.

From the moment they arrived in Kota Kinabalu, the students were in control of their adventure with each student taking on a leadership role from Day Boss, Safety Officer, Accountant, Wellbeing Lead, Photographer and Food Coordinator. Working together, they managed daily budgets, planned meals, coordinated with the local ground crew, organised drink breaks and looked after one another's wellbeing.

The expedition began with an introduction to the rich history and culture of Sabah. Students explored Kota Kinabalu, learning about the region's fascinating past, from its heritage to the lasting impact of British colonial rule. They embraced every opportunity to experience local life; from sampling traditional dishes and fresh fruit shakes at lively night markets, enjoying spectacular sunsets over the South China Sea, and a vibrant cultural dance performance.

After an action-packed start, the group enjoyed a well-deserved rest day exploring Borneo's stunning coastline. Snorkelling, kayaking and relaxing on a local island gave students the chance to discover the region's incredible marine life before sharing a beach barbecue together.

The next stage of the expedition brought the adventure they had been preparing for – a demanding four-day trek along the Banbamgan Trail. Carrying everything they needed on their backs, the students navigated challenging jungle terrain in intense heat and humidity, crossing rope bridges, tackling muddy trails and camping beneath the stars each night. Their determination, resilience and teamwork shone through as they supported one another every step of the way.

A highlight of the expedition was the opportunity to immerse themselves in Borneo's unique natural environment. Students contributed to a rainforest conservation service project in the Kinabatangan region, gaining first-hand experience of the importance of protecting one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems. They also visited the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, deepening their understanding of wildlife conservation and the vital work being carried out to safeguard these species.

Throughout the expedition, students learned not only about Borneo's extraordinary landscapes, wildlife and culture, but also about themselves. They developed resilience in challenging conditions, strengthened their communication and leadership skills, and discovered the value of supporting one another as a team. From campfire conversations and shared moments of laughter, to overcoming physical challenges and embracing unfamiliar experiences, every day offered new opportunities for growth.

We are incredibly proud of everything our World Challenge 2026 students have achieved. Their positivity, determination and willingness to embrace every aspect of the expedition made it an unforgettable experience. The memories they have created – and the confidence, independence and friendships they have built – will stay with them for many years to come.
