Our Curriculum and Specialisms

Our Curriculum

The curriculum at Bligh House is designed to support each child’s individual needs and help them feel confident and ready to learn. The curriculum is designed to fill gaps in learning attributed to time missed from education.

Where children have missed learning, we gently revisit and introduce key knowledge to help them access age-appropriate lessons with confidence. Teachers regularly check understanding and provide support to help fill any gaps.

Alongside academic learning, we place a strong focus on developing social skills, communication, and interaction. Children also benefit from integrated support such as speech and language and occupational therapy within the everyday learning environment.

  • Our entry curriculum for Year 7 and 8 promotes progress, discovery and confidence.
  • In Year 9, we further develop this, whilst preparing for GCSE content.
  • In Year 10, we embark on the first stages of GCSE qualifications while channelling intrigue and ability.
  • In Year 11, we progress the students ability and confidence in order to tackle GCSE qualifications, where suitable.

Our curriculum includes:

Maths, English, Science, PSHE, PE, IT, Humanities, Art, and Food Technology, play skills and PFA (preparation for adulthood)

A Successful Curriculum

In order for the curriculum to be successful, we ensure that our lessons:

  • are engaging and relevant, influenced by current affairs and cohort interests
  • are segmented and divided with opportunity for regulation
  • incorporate ASC teaching practice
  • include pre-teaching of otherwise assumed content
  • include skills based re-capping to aid in knowledge retention
