Known for their top-quality craftsmanship and dedication to excellence, the Steinway name is a dream for pianists everywhere.
For Year 12 student Exyn, originally from Guangzhou, China, being named a Steinway Scholar is more than an award—it’s a sign of her hard work, passion, and dedication to music. We had the chance to chat with Exyn about her journey to becoming a Steinway Scholar, the challenges she’s faced, and the moments that have shaped her love for music.
What drew you to the piano, and how has it shaped your musical journey so far?
“The piano caught my attention when I was very young. I still remember the first time I saw someone playing one when I was five years old. My mum took me to a gallery, and there was a grand piano. I stood in front of it, amazed, and thought, ‘This is so cool.’ From that moment, I knew I wanted to learn how to play.
“When I started, it wasn’t always easy. I struggled to sit still on the bench for long and would cry when my mum or teacher asked me to practise. But as I got older, I started to understand the stories and feelings behind each piece, and it became so interesting. Over time, I didn’t need anyone to tell me to practise—I wanted to do it myself.
“Learning the piano has taught me discipline, creativity, and how to express my emotions. It’s played a big part in shaping who I am.”
What does receiving a Steinway Scholarship mean to you, and how will it help you achieve your goals?
“Receiving the Steinway Scholarship is an amazing honour. It’s more than just an award; it’s recognition of my hard work and love for music. There were times when I felt stressed and even thought about giving up on my diploma, but this scholarship has given me the encouragement to keep going. It reminds me that all the effort I’ve put in has been worth it.
“The scholarship motivates me to aim higher and achieve more in my musical journey. It’s a great support that pushes me to keep improving.”
Can you describe a memorable performance or experience that solidified your commitment to music?
“One of my most memorable experiences was during a competition and exchange programme at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory. Before my performance, I was really nervous and focused too much on whether I would win. But after I finished playing, I stayed to listen to the other contestants.
“One of them, a conservatory student, played the same piece as me. Her performance was incredible—her expression, touch, and interpretation were all so inspiring. Listening to her made me realise how much more I could learn and grow as a musician. At that moment, I stopped worrying about the competition results.
“Instead, I felt inspired by how beautiful music can be as a way to connect with others and share art. That experience taught me that what I gained from listening and learning was more valuable than any prize. It strengthened my commitment to music and its deeper meaning.”
What role does music play in your life beyond performance, and how do you see it impacting others?
“Music isn’t just about performing; it’s a way to connect with people. For me, it’s a way to express my emotions and relax. I also think music can inspire and comfort people in ways that words can’t. It’s a universal language that brings people together.”
How do you approach preparing for performances, and how do you handle pressure in high-stakes situations?
“Preparation is so important. Consistent and focused practice is the foundation of any good performance, although I sometimes think I could spend even more time on it. Beyond practising, getting my mind ready is just as important. I use techniques like visualisation and mindfulness to stay calm and focused.
“When I’m under pressure, I remind myself to trust my preparation and focus on the joy of sharing music with the audience. Staying grounded in that joy helps me push past self-doubt and stay calm. A positive mindset really makes all the difference and leads to a better performance.”
Exyn’s love for music shines through in everything she says and does. With the support of the Steinway Scholarship, her journey is just beginning, and there’s no doubt that her music will continue to inspire and bring joy to others.
