Music

Years 7, 8, and 9

Girls have a one hour long practical lesson each week, focusing on practical participation, exploration and appreciation of music, developing confidence, and awareness of the IB Learner Profile and the Round Square IDEALS.  Students improve their knowledge of the elements of music, and gain a deeper understanding of the concepts of music through analysis, listening, research, performing and composing a wide variety of music.  Girls are exposed to everything from Elvis to Pachelbel’s Canon.

Years 10 and 11 – GCSE

Music GCSE (graded 9-1) includes analysis of eight miniature set works from different musical periods and cultures including; Instrumental Music 1700–1820, Vocal Music, Music for Stage and Screen and Fusions.  Musical elements, contexts and musical language are each developed through practical application and analytical work.  The development of performing and composing skills represents 60% of the total mark.  Assessment consists of a listening and appraising written paper based on the set works, and submission of performance and composition work recorded in the second term of Year 11.  Students must hold a minimum of Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 3 in order to take Music GCSE.

Sixth Form – International Baccalaureate

Music can be taken at both Standard and Higher Level in the IB Diploma programme at Cobham Hall.  Higher Level students have five lessons of one hour each, while those taking Standard Level have three one hour lessons each week.

The course includes in-depth analysis of two large-scale set works, and develops skills for unseen musical analysis from any period or culture.  There is also a 2000-word musical links investigation on two contrasting musical cultures of the students’ own choice.  Assessment consists of a three hour listening and appraising written paper based on the set works and several unseen musical works, and submission of performance and/or composition work recorded throughout the duration of the course.  Students must be a minimum of Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 6 to take Music at IB level.
